Fab Find: Buena Onda Mochila Bag at Fab.com

Buena Onda Mochila Bag

Buena Onda Mochila bag

I just spotted a fab find over at Fab.comBuena Onda Handwoven Mochila Bag in three vibrant colors – dark fuchsia, bright yellow and bright blue.  Buena Onda is a lifestyle brand that supports the Wayuu People of Colombia.  Buena Onda mean “Good Waves” or “Good Vibes.” It is an emotional saying that describes the essence of something.  All of Buena Onda products are completely handmade and fair trade by the Wayuu People of Northern Colombia.  The Wayuu are known for making Wayuu Mochilas that are made by hand without using a loom. Therefore each mochila is one of a kind and can not replicated.  A typical mochila bag takes at least 10 days to make.  This traditional craft has been practiced by the local Wayuu community for generations, with weavers handing down knowledge generation to generation.  These bold, bohemian bags aren’t simply stylish—each one is woven with history.  Price: $120 at Fab.com.

Designer Profile: Cynthia-Rose of Lunacyn

Lunacyn I discovered Lunacyn by Cynthia-Rose while browsing Etsy, and love her fun, vibrant handbags.  It’s evident from the cheerful prints and bright colors that Cynthia-Rose is passionate about designing and creating pieces that are a reflection of her personality.  Naturally, I wanted to find out more about the woman behind the bags.

HR:  When did you first start designing handbags? Did you always want to become a handbag designer or was it a gradual transition from a different career path?

C-R:  I started designing and making handbags late last year. I’ve always been a crafty and artistic person.  Whether it was drawing, painting, beading, or sewing, I was constantly creating something in my spare time.  When I was just 10 years old, my neighborhood friend and I would have craft sales in front of our houses.  I would say that I’ve always had this entrepreneurial spirit, so when I made my first handbag, I knew it was time to take the first steps toward creating my own professional opportunity.

HR:  What is the most challenging/rewarding aspect(s) of designing handbags and being in business for yourself?

C-R:  I’d have to say the most challenging part of designing handbags and having my own business was the start-up.  Not only was I making a giant leap of faith into the unknown, but also it takes a lot of time and effort to research, plan and advertise yourself.  One of the most rewarding aspects is being able to see my ideas and visions created into something that represents who I am and how I can be proud of my accomplishments.

HR: Shopping for fabric seems like a fun part of the design process. How often do you shop for fabric and what inspires you when choosing which fabric to use for your next bag?

C-R:  This part of the process is my absolute favourite! When I walk into the fabric store, I honestly feel like a kid walking into a candy shop.  I’m usually out shopping every couple of weeks.  I’m inspired by the different variety of colours, patterns, and textures each shop offers and finding that unique piece of fabric is always exciting.

Lunacyn handbagsHR: Describe the woman you design for.

C-R: I would describe her as fun, outgoing, and confident.  She loves being unique and telling the world how’s she’s feeling that day.  She’s not afraid to rock a bright colour and she also likes to show a bit of edge.

HR: Which Lunacyn bag is your personal favorite?  Do you carry other brands outside of your own?

C-R:  I only carry my own Lunacyn brand.  I have a few personal favourites but I would say right now my favourite is the red faux leather fold-over purse with the gold zipper and chain.  To me, red exudes confidence and is energizing, and the gold metal adds that little bit of sophistication.  When you wear this bag, you just feel motivated and you’re ready to take on the world.

HR:  Name five celebrities you would love to see rocking a Lunacyn original.

C-R:  Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Heidi Klum, and Princess Kate.

HR:  What five accessories should every woman have in her wardrobe?

C-R:  I would say accessories are the most important items of any outfit.  My top 5 would be a unique piece of jewellery, high heels, favourite lipstick, blazer/cropped jacket, and of course, a sweet handbag!

HR:  What advice can you give to aspiring handbag designers?

C-R:  Just go for it!  It may seem intimidating and it does have it’s challenges, but what you get out of the process will be truly rewarding.  You don’t want to go through life wondering what it could have been like.  Only you can make your dreams and passions come true.
